Biography
Born in Johor Bahru in 1998, Binti is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on the intricacies of human spirit through intimate mediums. She has achieved critical admiration and a cult following for her works made primarily on paper that incorporate collages, Jawi, literature, photography, paint and film into psychological and social experience.
With education in Cinematic Arts and Malay Literature, Binti creates worlds that transport and introduce the public into these rich private musings. Using a mix of languages, writing systems, photography and drawing techniques, Binti borders on this tension between confidential and communal using data and documentation from personal experiences that prove to be universal themes. She intentionally chooses paper as a main material to backdrop her work for its ephemeral nature, finding its connection as one of the most familiar textures to humankind referencing interactions with money, books, receipts and everyday life. Her work ‘Tuju One’ was a diaristic exploration on 24 pieces of paper that was curated as a part of Titik Garis Bentuk Exhibition at ILHAM Gallery where Binti was the youngest artist involved and only contemporary figure of her generation. Her solo exhibition ‘Sesuatu Yang Something’, presented by CULT Gallery platformed bodies of work that were made exclusively on paper.
Having multiple mediums in her practice, Binti has also gained recognition for her works in film with screenings at the Chicago Biennial, MITI Malaysia Pavilion, Osaka and Seashorts Film Festival. Her photography has also been exhibited by EXP+ Photo and ILHAM Gallery.
